I have a client with ten Windows 7 PCs. Recently, they ran out of space on their backup NAS drive and deleted some old backup files for three users.
Since then, the three affected machines have run out of disk space. However, when checking the properties of their folders on the C drive, it doesn’t seem like they should be full.
I suspect the issue might be related to Cobian Backup, as I’ve seen forum posts about the "Safe Mirror" folder filling up hard drives. I’ve disabled Safe Mirror on these machines, but no space has been freed. The folder path (C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Safe Mirror) doesn’t even exist. Other users have reported similar issues, but without any clear answers.
It feels like there are duplicate files on the hard drive that aren’t visible to Windows, yet the drive is showing as almost full. The drives were completely full until I freed up about 20GB of general junk.
These PCs typically have 200-300GB free out of their 500GB drives. I haven’t tried uninstalling Cobian Backup yet, but that could be a simple solution.
What’s the best tool to check where the disk space is being used?
